Atypical Facial Pain
Atypical Facial Pain (ATFP) is a syndrome encompassing a wide group of facial pain problems. There are many causes and varieties of ATFP. The pain is often described as burning, aching or cramping on one side of the face, often in the region of the trigeminal nerve and can extend into the upper neck or back of the scalp. Although rarely as severe as trigeminal neuralgia, most often it is longer in duration.
Common Symptoms
- facial pain occurs on one side of the face
- pain can extend into the upper neck or back of the scalp
- burning, aching or cramping sensation
- facial pain is continuous with few periods of remission
